Wall Hung VS Standing Vanity

Wall Hung VS Standing Vanity

It's one of the first decisions you'll make when choosing a vanity, and it affects everything — plumbing, installation cost, cleaning ease and how spacious your bathroom feels. Both styles have genuine advantages.

This guide breaks down the practical differences so you can choose based on your bathroom, your budget and the way you actually use the space — not just what looks good on Pinterest.

Two Styles, Two Very Different Feels

Walk into any bathroom showroom in Australia and you'll notice vanities split into two camps: wall-hung (also called wall-mounted or floating) and floor-standing (also called freestanding). The difference isn't just structural; it changes how the whole bathroom feels.

Neither is objectively better. But one will almost certainly suit your bathroom, your household and your renovation budget better than the other.

Wall-Hung Vanities

A wall-hung vanity is fixed to the wall with no legs touching the floor. It appears to float, with visible floor space underneath.

The advantages

Makes small bathrooms feel bigger. When you can see the floor running uninterrupted underneath the vanity, the room feels more open. In a small ensuite or powder room, this visual trick genuinely makes a difference.

Easier to clean underneath. No legs, no plinths, no awkward gaps where dust and hair collect. You can mop or vacuum right under the vanity.

Adjustable height. Because it mounts to the wall at whatever height you choose, you can set it higher if you're tall or lower if accessibility matters. Luma wall-hung vanities have a 500mm cabinet body, and can be positioned at whatever height suits your household.

Contemporary look. Wall-hung vanities feel modern and architectural. They pair naturally with large-format tiles, frameless mirrors and minimalist tapware.

The considerations

Wall strength matters. The vanity needs to be mounted into a solid wall, either masonry or a timber-framed wall with appropriate noggins or a mounting rail. Lightweight plasterboard alone won't support the weight.

Plumbing is more visible. With no cabinet sitting on the floor, your waste pipe and water connections are potentially visible below the vanity. A good installer will run the plumbing neatly into the wall, but this sometimes means moving existing plumbing.

Floor-Standing Vanities

A floor-standing vanity sits directly on the floor, either on legs or on a plinth base. It's the traditional format and still the most common in Australian homes.

The advantages

Simpler installation. It sits on the floor, you connect the plumbing, and you're done. The easier option for a vanity swap.

Hides plumbing completely. The cabinet body covers the waste pipe and water connections. No visible pipes, no need to chase plumbing into the wall.

More storage volume. Luma floor-standing vanities have a 720mm cabinet body compared to 500mm for the wall-hung models, giving you significantly more internal space for towels, cleaning products and everything else.

Works on any wall type. No need to worry about wall strength or mounting rails. If the floor is level, the vanity works.

The considerations

Can make small bathrooms feel smaller. A floor-standing vanity blocks the floor visually, which makes the room feel tighter.

Harder to clean around. The plinth or legs create edges where dust and moisture collect over time.

Quick Comparison

Choose Wall-Hung If:

Your bathroom is small and you want it to feel open

You want a contemporary, minimal look

You're doing a full renovation with plumbing changes

You value easy cleaning underneath

You want a non-standard height

Choose Floor-Standing If:

You're doing a like-for-like vanity replacement

Your walls can't support wall mounting

You need maximum storage volume

You prefer a traditional or grounded look

You're keeping existing plumbing where it is

Think about the three things you'll interact with most: how the bathroom feels when you walk in, how easy it is to maintain and how much you can store. Whichever two matter most will usually point you in the right direction.

Both Options, Same Quality

At Luma, all our vanity models, whether wall-hung or floor-standing, are built with the same Polytec thermolaminate surfaces, Grass Nova Pro Scala soft-close drawer runners and Blum Clip Top Blumotion hinges. The quality of the build doesn't change with the mounting style. The only difference is how it meets the floor.
